Taxonomy

A taxonomy is a structured classification system that organizes words, terms, and their synonyms into hierarchical groups. This systematic arrangement allows for the creation of taxonomies across a wide range of information types, including organizational structures, product catalogs, and geographical locations.

At its core, a taxonomy consists of hierarchical lists of terms accompanied by their synonyms. Each term within this structure can either encompass other terms or serve as an endpoint in the hierarchy. The inclusion of synonyms aims to streamline tagging and searching processes.

This system leverages taxonomies to facilitate several operations:

  • Tagging assets to ensure consistent metadata usage
  • Assigning labels to denote various characteristics of assets
  • Grouping assets based on multiple independent criteria to enhance discoverability
  • Simplifying asset searches by adhering to taxonomy hierarchies
  • Allocating configurations, security policies, and communication protocols to distinct groups of managed assets.
