Can I manage workstation firewalls with 12Port Horizon?

Yes, we can manage the firewalls on your workstations as we do with servers. However, we don’t expect this to be necessary for most customers. Our perspective is that it’s usually best practice to simply block all inbound connections on workstations. This can be done quite easily through Windows Group Policy or some custom scripting. This is why we generally focus on managing server firewalls with our product. Of course, we recognize that customers may have unique circumstances. Maybe their workstations need some inbound connectivity, or they simply prefer to close workstation firewalls through our management interface. In cases like these, we have no issue accommodating workstations, and we will work with customers to find appropriate pricing for each managed workstation.

How much additional configuration is required on each managed asset due to the lack of agents?

While we believe that our agentless architecture makes deployment much faster overall, there is still some initial setup required to allow 12Port to connect to your assets for remote monitoring and management. Our requirements for asset connectivity are as follows:

  • A service account with administrator/sudo privileges for each asset (this can be a shared domain account on Windows)
  • The appropriate remote management server (WinRM/ssh) running on each asset
  • Connectivity from the management server to each asset over the appropriate port

Fulfilling these requirements may be more simple or complex depending on the rigidity of your environment, but achieving asset connectivity is typically a short process for most customers. Once we can connect to a few test assets and run scripts on them, most of the remaining configuration is automated for you through our bulk asset import and auto-tagging features.

Is 12Port Horizon integrated with any PAM solutions?

We do not currently have direct integration with any PAM providers. However, all necessary interactions between 12Port and a deployed PAM solution can likely be achieved through our REST API. For example, when a PAM provider creates or rotates service account credentials, it can call our API to automatically update the respective assets in our database to preserve connectivity. We are interested in developing richer, more seamless integrations with PAM providers in the future as we work with more customers using their solutions. In the meantime, we will offer guidance to customers regarding our API usage and help them integrate our software with their existing PAM solutions on a case-by-case basis.
